Good Morning Canes Fam,

State of Declarations

A few of his words may be lost in translation, but there’s not need for translation when Louis Hedley booms it downfield. State of the U’s Gabby Urrutia focuses in on the Hurricanes special teams in his latest Canes Camp Report.

Beating Florida State never gets old. We’re reliving RB Frank Gore’s game-winning run for the Hurricanes in play No. 15 of our 100 Greatest Plays in Miami History series. Our own Marshall Thomas breaks down the historic moment.

State of the U’s own John Michaels wants you to know that everything is going to be all right with the Hurricane QBs. Win his latest piece, Michaels reflects on signal-callers from Miami’s past to apply lessons to the program’s present.

The ACC Network is set to launch in less than three weeks. On Thursday, our KappaCane got a sneak peak at what the channel will look like ahead of its August 22nd launch.

Welcome to the U!

It’s officially official. UCLA transfer Jaelan Phillips and USC transfer Bubba Bolden were both added to the Hurricanes roster on Thursday. The Miami Herald’s Susan Miller Degnan provides how these stars of the West Coast found their way to Coral Gables.

The Hurricanes added Nat Opaku to the roster this weekend. A former member of Marshal Thundering Herd in 2017, Opaku is listed as a striker on the Hurricanes team site.

Cooling off in Style

After another sweltering practice on Thursday, head coach Manny Diaz took the team to cool off at Tidal Cove Waterpark.

Injury Updates

DT Nesta Silvera is expected to be out of action for the next six to eight weeks.

Looking ahead to Miami’s week zero opponents, the Florida Gators are having their own injury issues ahead of the season opener. CB CJ McWilliams suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon that will force him to miss the rest of the 2019 season. McWilliams was competing to replace former DB Chauncey Gardner-Johnson Florida’s defense.

Recruiting Updates

For the first time in weeks, there’s no major impending announcement to speak of. The college football world is ramping up for the 150th season, with the recruiting calendar in the thick of yet another dead period.

However, we did receive some big news last week…

Five-star LB Justin Flowe included Miami in his Top 4 schools. It’s a reason to be excited, but the next step would be for the Californian to set up an official visit. Flowe made an appearance at a Miami’s scrimmage this past spring.

The 305 Beat

Christy Chirinos of the Sun Sentinel converses with a group of Miami freshmen who are still getting acclimated to the college game.

Dave Wilson of ESPN shines a light on some offseason feuds and storylines that have made headlines. QB Tate Martell and ‘The New Miami’ made the list.

The competition to win the starting QB spot continues for UM. Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald provides the latest developments in a pivotal competition.

The ‘Duke’ H-Town

After expressing his desire to be traded from the Cleveland Browns for months, ProCane RB Duke Johnson Jr. finally got his wish. On Thursday, Duke was traded to the Houston Texans for a fourth-round selection in the 2020 NFL Draft. The trade pairs Johnson with fellow ProCane RB Lamar Miller in the Texans backfield.

ProCanes NFL Updates

Kendrick Norton served as the honorary captain for the Miami Dolphins in their preseason opening game against the Atlanta Falcons.

After missing the first portion of training camp, guard Jonathan Felciano returned to practice for the Buffalo Bills this past weekend. He got the start at center for the Bills in their first preseason contest against the Indianapolis Colts last night.

In the latest edition of Cleveland Canes news, LB Ray-Ray Armstrong enters the team’s first preseason game as the starter at SAM (strong-side) linebacker. Armstrong, joins TE David Njoku and DE Olivier Vernon as the ProCane starters on the Browns roster.

You can see where the rest of the ProCanes contingent find themselves on the unofficial depth chart ahead of the team’s first preseason contest.

San Francisco 49ers safety Adrian Colbert is in a heated battle for the role of starting free safety. Colbert returns after missing just over half of the regular season with a high-ankle sprain.

Continuing with safety notes, Rayshawn Jenkins has garnered early praise for his work during the Los Angeles Chargers training camp. The third-year safety talked about his transition from a strong safety to free safety in this video.

After a subpar first season in Green Bay, TE Jimmy Graham is out to prove that he can still be an x-factor in year two with the Packers.

It’s early, but Dallas Cowboys rookie CB Michael Jackson Sr. has made a favorable early impression according to the Dallas News.

Aside from the absence of star RB Ezekiel Elliott, Cowboys DE Joe Jackson has been a highlight in the early portion of Cowboys training camp.

The Minnesota Vikings released their first unofficial depth chart of the preseason. ProCane guard Danny Isidora is listed as the backup at right guard, while rookie DT Tito Odenigbo is running as a fourth-string nose tackle.

Meanwhile in New England, WR Braxton Berrios continues to fight for a roster spot. The second-year receivers ability to work as a return man may provide a leg up on the competition.

Here’s a couple Hurricane quarterback legends pictured with Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen.
