Going Home to Get ‘Healthy’

The ‘Canes can finally prepare for their first home game of the season.

The start of the 2019 season hasn’t been nearly as glamorous as fans, coaches, and players wanted. Now, the Hurricanes prepare for some more ‘forgiving’ home games.

When compared to a neutral-site game against the rival Gators, and a visit to North Carolina in front of a hostile crowd — home matchups against Bethune-Cookman and Central Michigan definitely seem ‘easier.’

Barring a major upset, the ‘Canes should be 2-2 before facing Virginia Tech at home. Miami also has a bye week before facing the rival Hokies — benefitting the ‘Canes even more during this homestand. Of course, nothing should be taken for granted, as Miami sits winless through 2 games — but head coach Manny Diaz will surely have the ‘Canes ‘up’ for any opponent.

More importantly, during this stretch of upcoming games, Miami will ‘learn’ how to win. The Hurricanes had chances to win both of their games this season — they’re close to putting it all together. Some fans have jumped off the bandwagon already, but the pieces are here — and possibly — all they need to do is ‘taste’ victory.

Jarren Williams has looked solid through 2 contests — only 9 of his passes went for incompletions against UNC. Aside from a couple of close-calls on fumbles, Williams has done everything asked of him. He’s completed 71% of his passes, throwing for 523 yards and 3 touchdowns — with no interceptions. If he remains consistent, Miami won’t have to worry about an area of the team that has plagued them with issues for the last 2 seasons.

Looking towards other areas of the team, playing Bethune-Cookman should allow Miami’s bench to receive experience, which is crucial for a ‘reserve’ if their name is called due to unforeseen circumstances. Depth is a vital factor in building a championship-caliber contender, and ‘tune-up’ games like the one the ‘Canes have this upcoming Saturday are crucial.

In conclusion, Miami’s start to 2019 has raised some concerns, and rightfully so. Many expected Manny Diaz to immediately propel the ‘Canes back to national domination. While the results have been disappointing so far, the future is bright. Hurricanes’ fans have heard that statement long enough though, and have been waiting for the wins to finally pile up. Ultimately, experiencing victory will be important for this team, and a long home-stretch may hold the answer to Miami’s questions.
