Rumors abound about Alonzo Highsmith potentially joining the football program in some capacity

Welcome to the weekend Canes’ fans! Since Rhett Lashlee’s hiring as Miami’s next offensive coordinator, things have been a little quiet in Coral Gables. But that could be changing, as rumors regarding Alonzo Highsmith joining the program in an unknown role have cropped up. Highsmith said Thursday that any chance of him working at UM was dead but met with AD Blake James Friday in a closed-door meeting. After being let go by the Cleveland Browns, previously serving as their VP of Player Personnel, rumors began to swirl that Miami-great Alonzo Highsmith might join his alma mater in some form. The Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson squashed those rumors, only for athletic director Blake James to meet with Highsmith during a closed-door arrangement Thursday. Could Highsmith be joining Miami? And if he does, does Manny Diaz’s leash get shorter?

While reports surfaced that Wake Forest grad transfer QB Jamie Newman was considering Miami, he’ll ultimately be heading down to Georgia - where the Bulldogs need a replacement for Jake Fromm.
