With only 26 days until the start of college basketball season on Nov. 25, the Miami Hurricanes will play the Purdue Boilermakers in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Dec. 8 at the Watsco Center.
The announcement made Friday morning marks the first scheduled game of the season for the program, in addition to the other Atlantic Coast Conference and Big Ten Conference teams. An exact start time and broadcast information have yet to be determined.
The official schedule for the 2020-2021 season has yet to be released due to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on scheduling in college athletics. A matchup against Florida Atlantic University has been rumored to recur, according to various sources.
Coach Jim Larrañaga, who will lead Miami in his 10th season at UM, and the Canes registered a 15-16 record (7-13 ACC) last season. The team was eliminated in the second round of the ACC Tournament by the Clemson Tigers, 69-64, before the remainder of the tournament was canceled.
Purdue ended the year at 16-15 (9-11 Big Ten) and advanced to the Elite Eight round of the NCAA Tournament in 2019. Miami has never defeated Purdue, trailing 0-3 in the teams’ matchup history.
Having won against Illinois in Champaign, Ill., in last year’s ACC/Big Ten Challenge, the program will look to win its second-consecutive contest against a Big Ten team this season. Coach Larrañaga has improved the team’s record to 5-1 in that department over the last six meetings, with the only defeat being against Rutgers in 2018.
