ProCanes Highlights and NFL Week 11 Preview

After a Rocky Start to His NFL Career, Corn Elder Carves Out a Role in a Young Panthers’ Secondary

Week Ten ProCane of the Week: CB/Corn Elder - Corn Elder deserves some praise for being a key contributor in a tenacious, young Carolina Panthers secondary group consisting of 3rd year CB, Donte Jackson, as well as Rookies, Troy Pride Jr. and Jeremy Chinn. The young Elder, who is 26-years old, currently has the 20th best Pro Football Focus grade on the season at 70.8, which ranks ahead of former elite All Pro CBs, Jalen Ramsey, Janoris Jenkins, Josh Norman, Darius Slay, Casey Hayward Jr., Joe Haden, Stephon Gilmore, and Tre-Davious White.

Predominantly used in a nickel role, Elder is carving out a more involved presence in the secondary as he has played 160 snaps on defense the last three weeks. Elder has also been working closely with first-year Panthers coach, Matt Rhule, in order to improve in areas as he continues to progress at the NFL level. Elder’s young career has been rocky to date as he spent his rookie year dealing with a knee injury, and then got cut before bouncing around the Giants and Panthers practice squads’, but he now appears to be headed in the right direction.

ProCanes Week Ten Highlights:

Overall, the Miami ProCanes have seen better weeks in NFL play. The main highlight being the rare ProCane triangle on Monday Night Football where Bears Punter, Pat O’Donnell (2014), punted to Vikings Punt Returner, K.J. Osborn (2020), and was pursued on a coverage tackle by Bears CB, Deon Bush (2016). It’s a rare time where everyone can be credited for sound play as O’Donnell created enough hangtime to make the decision tough for Osborn, who bobbled the punt but held on, and Bush perfectly timed the tackle.

Chargers LB, Denzel Perryman, nearly picked off Tua Tagovailoa, which would have been the first INT of Tua’s career. The deflected pass was a gift that fell directly to Perryman but he couldn’t haul it in. On the bright side, Perryman and Safety, Rayshawn Jenkins, collected 8 tackles total.

Texans RB, Duke Johnson, had 14 rushes for 54 yards, Ravens RB, Gus Edwards, had 73 scrimmage yards. Veteran RB, Lamar Miller, also came off the practice squad and was eased in to the Bears’ offense with 5 offensive snaps.

Lastly, CB, Trajan Bandy, was added to the Cincinnati Bengals Practice Squad. As an undrafted rookie, Bandy has yet to play in the NFL but was previously on the Steelers Practice Squad.

While others’ careers are just getting started, an ageless ProCanes legend, Greg Olsen, may be coming to a close. The 14-year veteran ruptured his plantar fascia this past Thursday night, an injury he previously suffered early in his career to his other foot. Olsen is currently on a one-year deal with the Seahawks and plans to hit the Fox broadcasting booth after his NFL career. Olsen appears optimistic for a return based on his Tweet below and let’s hope his foot gets better. But, if not, he still has two other healthy legs and has had a hell of an NFL tenure.

Week Eleven Projected ProCane of the Week: S/Rayshawn Jenkins- The Safety has taken on a heightened role for the Chargers in the absence of star Safety, Derwin James. Jenkins should have a field day patrolling the New York Jets offense, who has been the embarrassment of the league as they await the 2021 NFL Draft where they can jump on Trevor Lawrence. Based on Denzel Perryman’s rise in action, he could also be a lead candidate for the ProCane of the week. Regardless, the Chargers-Jets game features a slew of ProCanes.
