Miami beats Florida (and others) for blue chip Safety

247sports

In a bit of a shocker, DeLand (FL) 4-star Safety Avantae Williams committed to the Miami Hurricanes over the Florida Gators at his national signing day announcement ceremony just moments ago!

A speedy and dynamic defender, the 5’11” 170lb Williams is one of the top players nationally at his position. An Under Armour All-American, Williams is well-known for his speed, athleticism, and skill on the field.

If this headline seems familiar, it should; Wiilliams committed to Miami nearly 3 years ago (February 2017, to be exact). He made that move on the same day as his cousin, RB Lorenzo Lingard. And, at the time, it made sense.

Since then, however, Williams has decommitted from Miami (one of about a million players to do that, but I digress) in May of 2018. Even when he was committed to Miami, Williams took visits to schools all over the country, gaining experience for what a variety of school campuses were like. In the course of this process, Williams committed to the Oregon Ducks in December 2018.

Even after that commitment, few people believed Williams would actually end up in Eugene for college. He maintained that commitment to Oregon for nearly a year before backing off of that pledge just before the early signing period. And, all along the way, Miami was in constant contact with Williams.

As National Signing Day approached, the clear 2 finalists for Williams were Miami and Florida. He had strong relationships with both staffs, and had visited each campus officially and unofficially many times over the course of the last 3 years of his recruitment.

But the stronger relationship was with Miami’s staff whose coaches, Manny Diaz and Ephraim Banda, had been recruiting him the entire way, and that secured Williams’s just-made commitment.

Williams is the 4th Safety to pick Miami in this recruiting class. He joins Brian Balom, Jalen Harrell, and Keshawn Washington at that position in this class. Williams is the 21st commitment for the Canes in 2020.

We’ll talk more about Williams’s skillset in the Recruiting Notebook, which will be up momentarily.

Welcome (back) to the U, Avantae!
