Miami was dominated in their first road game of the season, losing 11-2 to the Florida Atlantic Owls in their most disappointing game of their season so far. After today, the Hurricanes are left looking for answers at the plate, on the mound, and in the field.
The Owls started the scoring in the bottom of the third. FAU got an RBI single and a sac-fly to take an early 2-0 lead. They then added to the lead in the very next inning, with another RBI single.
Miami got the lead down to 3-1, but couldn’t make the game any closer. FAU extended the lead in a big way in the sixth. Two RBI-hits added two runs to the Owls’ scoring, and then matters got worse when a wild pitch let another run score. After that, Miami pretty much fell apart. FAU added five runs in the eighth. A three-run home run scored the first three runs of the inning. Miami then allowed another two runs on a fielding error and another wild pitch.
The ‘Canes had just seven hits on the evening and scored just two runs. Miami also made two errors during the game. Hurricanes pitching allowed nine earned runs. Tonight, Miami didn’t play well in any aspect of the game. At this point it’s become clear that the Hurricanes’ offense can not pick up the pitching staff on a rough night.
Miami struck out 11 times. The Hurricanes plate appearances last year were often strong and productive. This year however, the same approach has yet to be found, and with ACC play looming the Hurricanes are at serious risk of suffering a disappointing season.
Gino DiMare’s squad will hope to play better this weekend when they start ACC play against Pitt at home.
