Miami Northwestern rising senior Ja’Corey Hammett announced Wednesday that he was flipping his verbal commitment from Miami to West Virginia.

Hammett is a 2021 outside linebacker prospect who originally committed to Manny Diaz and the Hurricanes in late January.

He is rated a 3-star prospect by 247sports.com and is the No.88 ranked player in the state of Florida in his class.

The Hurricanes still hold verbal commitments from four of his Northwestern teammates including tight end Kahlil Brantley, wide receiver Romello Brinson, cornerback Tim Burns Jr. and safety Kamren Kinchens.

Brantley, who has emerged as a vocal leader in this recruiting class, tweeted less than ten minutes after Hammett announced the flip.

Miami has the No.11 class in the 2021 team rankings according to 247sports.com and now has 20 verbal commitments in total.

Deshawn Troutman (Orlando Edgewater) and Tyler Johnson (Miami Killian) are linebackers who are still committed to Miami in the class of 2021.

The Hurricanes will likely play several young linebackers during the 2020 season, including sophomore Sam Brooks Jr. and redshirt freshman Avery Huff.
