The Miami Hurricanes swept the Duke Blue Devils on Sunday afternoon with a 7-1 victory. Miami moves to 16-8 (10-7 ACC) with the win and finished off a 4-0 week with the victory after defeating FIU 21-1 earlier this week.

Both teams’ starters were excellent over the first four innings. Duke starter Jack Carey worked four, two hit innings before Miami could score in the fifth. Jordan Dubberly was just as good for Miami, working five innings while allowing just one run and striking out seven.

Despite Dubberly’s strong start Duke took the lead with a run in the fifth inning. Two doubles from Michael Rothenberg and Chase Cheek were enough to score the first run of the game and give the Blue Devils the lead.

Miami responded in the bottom of the fifth. Dominic Pitelli led off the inning with a walk before Gabe Rivera was hit by a pitch to give the Hurricanes two runners on. Both runners advanced on a passed ball before Miami’s first run of the game scored on an Anthony Vilar RBI groundout. Yohandy Morales then came through for Miami yet again, hitting a two-run homerun that gave the Hurricanes the lead after five innings.

Both teams’ bullpens prevented any further damage for the next two innings after four combined runs scored in the fifth. Miami’s bullpen performance was highlighted by Anthony Arguelles, who worked out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth to keep the Hurricanes in the lead.

In the eighth Miami put the game out of reach. Three straight singles started the inning, with the third scoring a run. Christian Del Castillo followed the hits with an RBI-groundout before CJ Kayfus hit an RBI-double to add another run for the Hurricanes. Miami’s final run of the weekend was driven in by Dominic Pitelli, who drove in Kayfus from second with an RBI-single.

Carson Palmquist worked the eighth and ninth innings to earn his ninth save of the season and Miami swept the series. The Hurricanes have now won five games in a row and will hope to continue their winning streak Wednesday against FIU.
