The Miami Hurricanes dropped to 29-17 (17-15 ACC) after a 3-0 loss to the Florida Atlantic Owls in their final home game of the 2021 season. Miami was 8-0 in mid-week matchups this season heading into Tuesday night, but the Hurricanes couldn’t find a rhythm offensively and were shutout to lose their first mid-week game of the season.
Miami kept the game scoreless until the top of the third inning. Florida Atlantic started the inning with a double, and Miami reliever Anthony Arguelles was unable to work around the hit as an RBI-single scored the first run of the game for FAU.
Florida Atlantic added insurance runs in the top of the seventh and eighth innings to secure the victory. FAU scored in the seventh after a triple led to a perfectly placed RBI-bunt single that made the score 2-0. In the eighth a solo homerun from B.J. Murray extended the lead to 3-0.
The Hurricanes’ offense had difficulties at the plate all night long. Miami had just six hits on the evening and their only true opportunity for a rally was in the seventh inning when two hits gave Miami runners on the corners but a strikeout and a groundout ended the inning.
There is a lot at stake for Miami over the end of this week and during next week’s ACC Tournament. The Hurricanes currently rank 22nd in RPI but would most likely be a three seed if NCAA Tournament selection day was today. A good finish to this week in a weekend series against Louisville and a solid performance at the ACC Tournament could give the Hurricanes a chance at being selected as a two seed, but Tuesday’s loss makes things more difficult for Miami.
Miami played two of their best games of the season last Saturday and Sunday against Georgia Tech. They’ll need to replicate that performance this weekend in a series that has absolutely massive postseason implications. The Hurricanes final series of the season this weekend could end up being their most important.
