This Week in Canes Hoops: 11/27 Edition

The ladies won the Miami Thanksgiving Tournament. The guys had the week off.

We’re back for another week of Miami Hurricanes Men’s and Women’s Basketball. The guys had Thanksgiving week off after winning the 2023 Bahamas Championship. The ladies beat Colgate at home on Friday, then stayed home to beat East Tennessee State to win the Miami Thanksgiving Tournament.

Last week:

It happened today, but Miami moved up two spots to #8 in this week’s AP Top 25 Poll. The Canes can climb even higher with two wins this week, one at Kentucky. The Wildcats moved up from #16 last week to #12 in today’s poll.

The Lady Canes beat the Colgate Raiders, 67-49. Jasmyne Roberts led the team in scoring with 13 points. Lazaria Spearman came off the bench to pitch in 10 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 assists. The game was tied 25-25 at halftime. Coach Meier’s squad pulled away in the second half. They also shot the ball better, going 27-52 from the field, 52%, including 5-12 from three-point range, 42%.

Coach Meier’s squad stayed home to beat East Tennessee State, 68-44. The win gave the Lady Canes the 2023 Miami Thanksgiving Tournament title. Shayeann Day-Wilson came off the bench to lead the team with 21 points and 3 assists. Miami’s hot shooting continued as they shot 23-40 from the field, 57.5%, including 9-16 from three-point range, 56%. The ladies are now 5-0 on the season.

This week:

The guys travel to Lexington tomorrow to take on #12 Kentucky, 11/28 at 7:30 PM EST on ESPN. The Wildcats have won three in a row after falling to former #1 Kansas a couple weeks ago. This game is one of the biggest matchups in the inaugural ACC/SEC Challenge. Miami returns home to play Notre Dame on Sunday, 12/2 at 12:00 PM EST on ACC Extra. This will be the first conference game of the season for Coach L’s squad.

The Lady Canes travel to Starkville to take on #21 Mississippi State on Wednesday, 11/29 at 7:15 PM EST on SEC Network. The Bulldogs are 8-0 and will be Miami’s first Power 5 opponent of the season. The Lady Canes return home to face NJIT on Sunday, 12/3 at 12:00 PM EST. The Highlanders are 4-3 this season.
