Trent Harris
DE - 6'2 227 - Winter Park, FL
4 star prospect who chose Miami over Alabama, Boston College, and UF among others.
Recorded 109 tackles , including an incredible 39 for loss, and 14 sacks his Senior season in H.S.
Harris is a natural pass rusher with an explosive first step, and his pure speed is his best asset. He does also already have a very polished spin move and a very good motor.
Needs to add weight to his frame to be more than a pass rush specialist at this stage.
Chances He Redshirts (1-10) - 6
As part of this series we will evaluate if the given newcomer stands a chance to sit out his first season to retain eligibility.
Harris reminds me a ton of Tyriq McCord when he was a freshman. But McCord was able to see PT ASAP because Miami did not have players like the Junior version of himself, Al-Quadin Muhammad, and Chad Thomas ahead of him. Harris is good enough to play right now, but considering the sudden embarrassment of riches Miami has in edge pass rushers, he likely sits out this season and adds weight. He did participate in spring practice, so there is a chance this prognostication is wrong, and TH sees the field sooner than expected.
Summary: It is a very good sign that the 'Canes can bring in a player this good for "depth." But Harris is explosive enough to be a very good front line player by next season. If UM's defense is to get where it needs to be, developing ultra talented players like Harris and getting them to be consistent and productive on game days will be the key. It will be interesting to see just how high his ceiling is in the coming years.
Stay tuned for more Freshman profiles as we count down to Louisville on Labor Day.
