Terry McCray
LB - 6'3 215 - Pompano Beach, Fl (Blanche Ely H.S.)
3 star prospect who picked Miami over schools like FAU and Cincinnati.
Decent athlete who runs the 40 in the 4.7-4.9 range (will need to improve that) and projects as a 3-4 inside LB.
Also shows very good instincts and quickness, to get to the ball quickly and blow up plays.
Chances He Redshirts (1-10) - 9
As part of this series we will evaluate if the given newcomer stands a chance to sit out his first season to retain eligibility.
McCray looks more like a football player than an athlete. The prototype UM player in the past has been both. So like many freshman he should benefit from a year or two in the Miami strength and conditioning program, where he can up his speed. Looks like he has some room to build on his frame as well. The 'Canes have some depth concerns at LB, but my best guess is McCray does not see the field this season.
Summary: While he does not have that "wow" factor on film, it does not mean he can not be a very solid performer in time. A guy like Bart Scott, who was not a particularly super athletic LB but made it up for it with toughness and smarts, is a good example of McCray's potential upside. At worst he can be a pretty decent depth guy and a special teams contributor.
Stay tuned for more Freshman profiles as we count down to Louisville on Labor Day.
