Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) University School WR Sam Bruce (5'8/166) has been impressing colleges throughout the last few months, playing for the South Florida Express Elite 7-on-7 team. He is considered one of the most explosive play-makers in South Florida, and even more impressive is the fact that this past season was his only freshmen season.
The class of 2016 prospect currently holds 15 offers, and he picked up a ‘Canes offer earlier this month while participating in one of Al Golden's summer camps.
"I got the offer from Coach Golden himself," Bruce said. "It was just an all around good experience. I spent the whole day down there, really enjoying my time down there. I got to build a good relationship with Coach Golden and the Receivers Coach Brennan Carroll. They grabbed me right after the first session, we went around and looked at the school. I got a chance to go up to Coach Golden's office and sit in the big chair, look at all the trophies and all the memorabilia. I really loved the atmosphere up there, they are just real good guys. When they offered me, I was so surprised that I got the offer as a freshmen, because many seniors and juniors have a hard time getting recruited to Miami. I was just really blessed to grab the offer that day."
Of where Miami stands, Bruce said, "Miami is definitely recruiting me the hardest right now--They are definitely my number one team right now."
Bruce grew up rooting for Florida State, and he's planning to go there soon to earn that offer.
"I'll be up there in July," Bruce said. "I'm looking forward to going up there meeting the coaches and receiving an offer to FSU. I talked to coach Sal (Sunseri), and he said they really like me."
This past weekend, Bruce and the rest of his SFE Elite 7-on7 teammates played at the IMG national championships. They ended up finishing in second, after a one point lose to Team Tampa in the championship round. Bruce played extremely well, showing off his quickness and his dependable hands.
"Aw man, it was just an amazing weekend," Bruce said. "Unfortunately we didn't come out on top, but all around it was a great weekend. I got to play against some great teams and some exceptional players."
Bruce plans to use his summer break wisely. He will be working hard to improve his overall game, so he come back a better players next season.
"I'm just doing a lot of speed training right now, and a lot of weight lifting," Bruce said. "We actually started 'sacrifice' already, which is just like summer workouts, which is just sacrificing our whole summer to the team. Just working hard right now getting ready for the season."
